Professor Kessler currently serves as the Director of the School of Architecture and Construction Management at Washington State University . In this capacity he is responsible for the overall management of the School and working with the faculty in establishing long term goals and objectives at both the Pullman and Spokane campus. Particular areas of emphasis include interdisciplinary education and integrative learning. These objectives are being achieved through unique course curriculum and direct linkages between the School and the profession. As Director he has been responsible for the implementation of the accredited Master of Architecture program as well as the reformation of the construction management curriculum. He is working on issues of integrated practice and sustainability at a national level.

Professor Kessler is a registered architect in the State of Washington and holds his NCARB certificate. He is also a member of the American Institute of Architects. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree and a Master of Architecture Degree, earned from the University of Southern California in 1985. Professor Kessler has extensive professional design experience including being responsible as design architect for building types ranging from schools and drama theaters to prisons, jails and resort hotels. He has worked for both national and international design firms.

As a member of the WSU faculty since 1987, Professor Kessler has been responsible for teaching design studio courses as well as architectural theory/ philosophy. His theory course is structured to include contemporary literary and philosophical discourses, and their influence relative to the profession of architecture. Studio courses focus upon the relationship between architecture and environment with specific emphasis on the phenomenal qualities of architecture. Recent investigations seek to link phenomenal with cotemporary issues related to globalization, technology and energy systems.

Professor Kessler has written and published papers focusing on the role of myth and architecture as well as the tradition of paradise and idealized environments, in Islamic architecture. He has presented his work at national and international conferences including Siena , Italy , Auckland , New Zealand and Copenhagen , Denmark . Current work includes a book entitled Memories and Dreams of Architecture. This book is a collection of fictional narratives and images related phenomenal human experiences between architecture and the landscape. Additional work includes a co-authored paper focusing the role of the global environment and its transformation of interior space.

Professor Kessler is married with two grown children. He is an avid runner and holds a third degree black belt in Karate.
